Protesters Have the Right to Protest … and to Resist Unlawful Arrest

Top Military Commander and Courts Support Right to Protest

In response to comments from those supporting the police crackdowns on peaceful protesters exercising their constitutional rights but violating local ordinances (see comments here), reader Purplemuse writes:
The Constitution supersedes local ordinances that are being used to OBSTRUCT 1st Amendment Rights. The camping ITSELF is in order to MAKE A STATEMENT – a First Amendment Right. Protesters are not camping because it is fun to expose yourself to the elements and hardship and you want to roast wienies and marshmallows and drink beer while swapping ghost stories.www.washingtonsblog.com/2011/11/protesters-have-the-right-to-protest.html

'Occupy Oakland' protesters, police standoff

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Thousands of 'Occupy Wall Street' protesters peacefully marched in the streets of Oakland on Wednesday picketing banks and disrupting operations at the nation's fifth-busiest port. Around 10:30 p.m. a group of a couple hundred protesters went into the Travelers Aid building to occupy it. For a while the crowd danced in the streets outside the building and used large dumpsters to block the road leading to the building on Telegraph and 16th, near Frank Ogawa Plaza and hung a banner saying, "Occupy Everything."abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local/east_bay&id=8415827

BART cops defend release of driver that hit protester

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- BART police are responding to criticism about how they handled an accident involving a car and protesters. What BART calls 'standard procedure' seemed like favoritism to the protesters.
Cellphone video from Wednesday night shows marchers passing down Broadway at 11th Street and a Mercedes Benz trying to cross through them. It shows a protester jumping in front of the car, banging on the hood and then the driver hitting his gas, knocking down the one protester in front and another in back. Both were taken to the hospital. abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local/east_bay&id=8417185

Occupy protesters disavow Oakland violence

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Occupy Wall Street protesters had just half a day to celebrate what they saw as their biggest victory so far: a daylong gathering in Oakland that drew thousands of people and led to the peaceful shutdown of the nation's fifth-busiest port. Then, after midnight, the vandalism began.
Hours after a small group of what city leaders called "provocateurs" clashed with riot police, set fires and shattered windows early Thursday, demonstrators across the country condemned the violence and wondered whether it was a turn that would destroy their cause.www.timesunion.com/news/article/Occupy-protesters-disavow-Oakland-violence-2249933.php

A visit to Occupy Oakland from a community voice - Full story: Oakland Local.
Riding my bike from West Oakland to Downtown Oakland tonight, I wondered what the Occupy Oakland protest would look like. The streets at 7:30pm on a Friday night looked too empty as I crossed under 580 on 7th Street. I took a left onto Jefferson Street, and still saw no one on the sidewalk and very few cars.  spot.us/pitches/1089-fund-reporting-on-occupy-oakland-by-oakland-local/updates/1159-occupyoakland-from-oaklandlocal

Occupy Oakland: Will the General Strike Have Legs?

Ugly images from last week's clash in front of City Hall have put authorities on the defensive and energized the Occupy Oakland crowd, whose encampment continued to swell over the weekend. Residents used wooden pallets to begin rebuilding the tent city razed by cops last Tuesday. Police break up Occupy Wall Street camp in Virginia

LONDON/RICHMOND, Virginia: Police cleared out a plaza in Richmond, Virginia early Monday that had been home to Occupy Wall Street protesters, ordering out dozens of people who had encamped there since Oct. 17 and arresting those who refused to leave.
Dozens of anti-Wall Street protesters were arrested Sunday in Texas, where they clashed with police over food tables, and in Oregon, where officers dragged them out of a park in an affluent neighborhood. In New York and many other East Coast cities, it was a snowstorm that was making it difficult for demonstrators to stay camped out in public places.  www.dailystar.com.lb/News/International/2011/Nov-01/152727-police-break-up-occupy-wall-street-camp-in-virginia.ashx#axzz1cTIfYxay

Meet the Guy Who Snitched on Occupy Wall Street to the FBI and NYPD

The Occupy Wall Street protests have been going on for a month. And it seems the FBI and NYPD have had help tracking protesters' moves thanks to a conservative computer security expert who gained access to one of the group's internal mailing lists, and then handed over information on the group's plans to authorities and corporations targeted by protesters. gawker.com/5850054/meet-the-guy-who-snitched-on-occupy-wall-street-to-the-fbi-and-nypd

Occupy Wall Street: Like the Tea Party it Should Be Taken Seriously

Over the past month the country has experienced a wave of protests throughout its most prominent cities, and some less prominent cities known as Occupy Wall Street (OWS).  Discussion surrounding OWS has been met with mixed reviews, some praising it for its call for accountability by Wall Street and some with skepticism over its organization and unified message, or rather lack thereof.   www.philly2philly.com/politics_community/politics_community_articles/2011/10/29/47964/occupy_wall_street_the_tea_party_it_

Want To Defeat The Banks? Stop Participating In The System!

In Franz Kafka’s most popular work “The Trial”, his characters relate a short parable which has fascinated and confused curious readers for generations. That parable is entitled “Before The Law”, and its message has been interpreted, reinterpreted, and agonized over by the labyrinthine contrariness of academia, producing numerous conflicting views:  www.alt-market.com/articles/301-want-to-defeat-the-banks-stop-participating-in-the-system
